Columbus Blue Jackets forward Brandon Dubinsky has been cleared by the NHL after his punishing hit to the head of Anaheim Ducks centerman, Saku Koivu. Koivu was knocked unconscious after a hit by Dubinsky during the second period of Sunday’s game. Dubinsky received a game misconduct for the hit. Koivu is back in Anaheim where he is being evaluated for play..
But, Koivu is just the latest in a cavalcade of injured Ducks players: Fasth, Sbisa, Silfverberg, Belesky of note. Is it “open season” on Ducks? Recently Dallas Stars player, Ryan Garbutt received a 5 game suspension for his knock-out hit to Dustin Penner. I don’t know if there have been more vicious hits since the new rules were put into play, but it seems like it. Maybe we are just more aware of it now since the rules are supposed to effect the game at hand, and punish the offending player (and his team) for games to come. It seems to me the players were safer before the rules regulating hits to the head were implemented.
Thank goodness there’s a load of ready, young talent in Norfolk. The team is weathering the injury attrition well. Tonight it’s the Flyers. Let’s go Ducks!
